The automobile is a machine that powers the wheels. The earliest automobiles were hand-cranked pedal cars. However, in the mid-19th century, mass production became possible, and many small carmakers began to create mass-produced vehicles. By the early 1900s, hundreds of new companies were producing automobiles in small numbers. In 1914, the Ford Motor Company created mass-produced cars using a moving assembly line. This allowed manufacturers to produce cars at consistent quality and low prices. This innovation allowed Henry Ford to persuade millions of Americans to purchase the Model T. General Motors followed suit, offering affordable luxury and annual model changes.
