Today, most automobiles are manufactured by a handful of major companies. Until the mid-20th century, there were as many as 100 car manufacturers. These manufacturers built a variety of cars in small quantities. The number of automakers peaked in the 1910s, and by the 1930s, the number had fallen to only a few. By this time, the Ford Motor Company had established mass production and the moving assembly line, and consumers could now purchase a car for a reasonable price. By then, the automobile industry had become a major force in American culture, and Henry Ford had wooed millions of people into purchasing his Model T. General Motors was another automaker that became a major force in the world market through its offering of inexpensive luxury cars and annual model changes.
